A SURVEY ON SOCIO-MEDICAL PROBLEMS OF STUDENTS OF ADULT EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF KOREA


Abstract
This survey was conducted from June 1975 to October 1975 with the 1, 300 students of the 21 Adult Schools registered at the Educational Association of Korea (Foundation).. Out of the 1,300 students, 636 students responded to the questionnaire and the results. of the survey with the above 636 subjects were summarized as follow:
1. Characteristics of Subjects
(1) Age and Sex
Most of their ages belonged to 65-69 age group. 77.6% were males. (2) Education and Religion
19.3% were illiterates and 35.5% believed in Buddhism. 25.6% did not believe in any religion.
(3) Previous Occupation
Most of them had not any definite occupation. 29.6% were previously engaged in farming, 2.5% in educational profession and 0.3% in medical profession. (4) Health Problem
Fortunately 67.6% did not have any disease but 27.7% were suffering from neurotic: diseases,_34.1% from stomach or intestinal diseases, 17.6% from lung disease and 14.2%. from other diseases. Most of them suffering from lung diseases, were suffering from tuberculosis.
(5) Pocket Money
Their average monthly pocket money was less than 2,000 won. 79.8% had not 2, 000
won a month as their pocket money and used to get more money from their sons. 2. Characteristics of Adult School
The 72.5% of the subjects attended the adult school for less than six months. 95.6
-showed their satisfaction and happiness in attending adult school but had to pass time
-without doing anything while they did not attend the school. A certain measure should be set up to make aged people happy while they are not-: attending the school. 3. Sociological Characteristics
The 23.9% of them pointed out that contemporary young people had not any idea to. respect aged people and 19.3%-acknowledged that present young people were wise and aggressive: _ -
Out of 44.3% of them who proposed to guide and instruct the young people by their
own deeds, 12.9% wished to have dialogue-with young _people, 17.1% demanded that a welfare system and -social security should be set up in order to promote aged people¢¥s benefit and 17.1% wanted to have the work for them to do_
Considering those aged people¢¥s wish, desire and demand, -society should have more concern with them and the science on ages; people must be set up as soon as possible.
